Roadtrip 2022 Spring: Seaside - Bend - Boise - Park City - Grand Junction - Park City - Boise - Richland

Day 22 - Colorado National Monument

The Monument has crazy winding roads that teeter over many precipices. And no guardrails, in keeping with the philosophy of Monuments.

Roadside view from the top end of the Serpent's trail.

See? No guardrails.

Plenty of inaccessible ledges.

The local geologists say that giant slab slid down the cliff face in slow motion over many years. Uh-huh. I subscribe to the big bang theory.

Pancake like forms from the lower platform at Artist's Point lookout.

A family of hoodoos froms a long thin protruding spine.

Waterfalls dot the landscape of side canyons.

From the other side - they're known as the "coke ovens". But really - they aren't - despite misleading signage!

So far we have red, orange, yellow, purple and now - white bloomin' things.

The road throught the monument is an engineering marvel - just a wee bit nervous making for closeness to some very steep drops!

Spot the big horn sheep!

A bit of wild weather at day's end - but it doesn't hit us on our amazing porch - with a view.

The final crescendo - an intense and short lived sunset.
